We live in an exciting time, when whole new fields of science are being defined. Bioinformatics is one of those terms that sounds like you should know what it means, but do you really?

At its next virtual meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, 6:30-8:30 p.m., MADIA Tech Launch is hosting Richard Johnston to share his perspectives about using bioinformatics and its role in developing businesses. If you are planning to engage in a life-science related business, understanding the field is essential.

Johnston is not a bionic man, but he is an expert consultant in the nexus of biology and computers, and is known locally for his teaching role at Pasadena City College. The field of bioinformatics combines various fields like biology, computer science, mathematics, and information engineering to create methods, databases, and software to better understand biological data, especially for complex fields like genetic research.

Of course, the best science occurs with replicability, so organizing complex data in a way that can be shared amongst different fields and practitioners serves to advance reliable results. And with those advances in research, come opportunities for business to use those findings especially in industries like pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.

Bioinformatics is a fairly new field of scientific research that has evolved in the last few decades in parallel with the growing understanding of data science and the chemistry and structure of molecules and living cells. It is easy to see how overwhelming such information may become with multiple disciplines trying to document such advanced understandings of complex processes.

Johnston will be speaking on “Using Bioinformatics in Start-ups and Industry, from the Beginning and into the Future.” Johnston, with a master’s in bioinformatics from the UCLA School of Medicine, has more than 18 years of experience advising both academic and commercial biotechnology organizations.

MADIA Tech Launch virtual meetings are free with advanced registration and provide a networking opportunity along with good techie information in a convivial atmosphere. Participants are invited to login at 6:30 p.m. for self-introductions and casual chats, and Johnston will begin his presentation at 7 p.m., followed by questions and more conversation.

MADIA Tech Launch is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting the San Gabriel Valley’s entrepreneurial and technology community from Arcadia to Glendora and provides educational and networking opportunities throughout the year.
