Monrovia defeats San Marino 35-0 in first league game of the season

It was complete domination for the Wildcats on Friday night as they took care of business on the road, shutting out the San Marino Titans 35-0.

It didn’t take long for the Wildcats to take control of the game, as they scored a quick touchdown on their first possession of the game. Quarterback Nick Hernandez completed a pass to receiver Daylen Wilson who took it all the way for a 46-yard touchdown.

After a three and out for the Titans resulted in a punt, Monrovia scored yet another quick touchdown pass, this time a 52-yard dagger to Mario Minor. The scoreboard showed a 14-0 Wildcats lead after kicker Bryan Gomez made his second PAT attempt of the contest.

Monrovia continued the drive they started in the first quarter heading into the second. Instead of the deep passing threat, it was the Wildcats run game that began to take fruition as they made the score 21-0 after back Zeph Pascasio crossed the goal line after a 5-yard run.

The Wildcats continued to pile on when the score reached 28-0 before the halftime period thanks to yet another short touchdown run, this time by Tyree Myles. They eventually added salt to the wound in the second half when Hernandez earned his third touchdown pass of the game after connecting with Wilson yet again for a long score, making it 35-0 which was ultimately the final score.

The victory now makes it four straight wins for MHS, along with their 6-1 record. Despite the quick start to the season in which the Wildcats won five of their first six matchups, it was essential for Monrovia to shift their focus to interleague play. Friday’s win was certainly a good start, as they join La Cañada as the only teams with a 1-0 record in the Rio Hondo standings.

For San Marino, they now drop to 1-6 for the season, as they are set to play South Pasadena next who currently hold a 5-1 record.

The Wildcats’ next game will be against the Temple City Rams who are coming off a disheartening 56-42 away loss to La Cañada. The contest will be played at Temple City High School on Friday, Oct. 11 with kickoff being at 7 p.m.
